There’s a plan to shorten the eight-hour working day.

The Minister of Labour and Social Welfare of Montenegro, Naida Nišić, announced on Monday that a seven-hour working day will be introduced in the country by the end of the year, RTCG television reported.

What Prime Minister Milojko Spajić announced in the pre-election campaign will be implemented this year, Nisić said, referring to the plan to shorten the eight-hour working day.

“A satisfied and well-rested employee is more innovative, more productive and more loyal, which contributes to increased profits for employers, and higher profits for employers translate into higher government revenues. There will also be more time for family and friends,” Spajić explained.

He added that the working weeks of employees in Montenegro are among the longest in Europe and amount to over 42 hours on average, which is over four hours a week more than the average in EU countries.

The Minister of Labor and Social Welfare of Montenegro also assured that there are no plans to abolish any social benefits or the Pension Fund.

She added that work is underway to harmonise the process of issuing pensions, especially for people who worked for them in different countries that made up Yugoslavia in the past.

“About 3.5 thousand retirees from former Yugoslav countries currently receive funds that are lower than the average benefits in our country,” she noted.
