Syria requests urgent global action to halt Israeli aggression

Following the recent missile attack on targets in the Syrian capital Damascus and its suburbs, the Syrian Foreign Ministry has demanded “urgent international action” to stop the aggression and atrocities of the Israeli regime which Syria has been subjected to for years.

The call was made on Sunday after Israeli missiles struck a number of homes, mostly in the Kafr Sousa neighborhood in central Damascus, leaving five people—including a soldier—dead and 15 civilians injured. Syria’s official news agency, SANA, cited the Foreign Ministry as making the announcement.

Al-Mayadeen news agency reported that the Israeli strike also targeted areas in the countryside around Damascus, including Tal al-Masih, which is north of al-Suwayda in southwest Syria and is close to the city of Shahba. The Syrian air defenses are said to have intercepted the majority of the missiles.

An ambush by the terrorist organization Daesh Takfiri near a major Syrian city resulted in up to 53 deaths, according to Syrian state media outlets the day before the Israeli attack.

The statement read: “At a time when Syria was attempting to mend its wounds, bury its martyrs, and receive condolences, sympathy, and international humanitarian support in the wake of the devastating earthquake, the Israeli entity launched an air aggression today targeting the civilian-populated residential neighborhoods in Damascus, resulting, in a primary toll, in the martyrdom of five civilians and the injury of 15 others as well as the destruction of a number of houses.

The report continued, “The aggression comes in the context of the ongoing Israeli attacks against Syrian civilian targets, including homes, service facilities, airports, and ports, intimidating the Syrians who are still dealing with the devastation caused by the earthquake and helping those affected by it.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the hostile action also coincided with the Daesh attacks, which resulted in the deaths of dozens of innocent civilians in the eastern countryside of Homs Province.

The statement read, “The continuation of these brutal attacks and crimes against the Palestinian and Syrian people constitutes an explicit threat to peace and security in the region and requires urgent international action to stop the Israeli aggressive actions on Syrian territory.”

“Syria expects the UN Secretariat and Security Council to denounce Israeli aggression and crimes, take the necessary action to prevent them from happening again, hold them [Israelis] accountable, punish their perpetrators, and ensure they don’t happen again.”

Following the development which is similar to that of Palestine, the Palestinian resistance group Hamas on Sunday denounced Israeli aggression in Syria and urged resistance to the “brutal fascist occupation.”

Hamas also referred to the Israeli government as “an absolute evil that can only be dissuaded by force and resistance until its demise from our land and sanctuaries.”

The Israeli attack on Damascus and its surroundings was denounced by the Russian Foreign Ministry, which also emphasized that it was a flagrant violation of international law and would have serious repercussions for the region.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova issued a statement saying, “We strongly condemn the Israeli military actions, which are a flagrant violation of international law, and we call on the Israeli side to stop armed provocations against Syria, which will have dire consequences for the entire Middle East region.”
