Calvin Bassey compares himself with Liverpool legend James Milner

Calvin Bassey has excelled at both centre-back and left-back for Rangers following in the footsteps of James Milner

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has likened his playing career to that of current Liverpool vice-captain James Milner for his ability to play in different positions.

Bassey promised that whichever position he is asked to play in, he will always give his best either with the Super Eagles or with his club side Rangers.

The 22-year-old defender broke into the Rangers’ starting line-up as a centre-back despite starting his career as a natural left-back.

I will even play as a striker – Bassey

In an interview with NFF TV, when asked what his favourite position is, Bassey claimed that he would even play as a striker as long as he plays football.

The Rangers’ 2022 Young Player of the Year promised that he would always give his best, in whatever position he is selected, as long as he plays football.

Bassey said: “In terms of my preferred position for me I just like to play football. Wherever the manager puts me even as a striker, I’m going to go there and give everything I’ve got.”

Like James Milner, like Calvin Bassey

Further explaining why he is not worried about playing different positions, Bassey stated that players like Milner also play in different positions for Liverpool based on the demands of the manager.

“Sometimes it depends on what my coach wants from me, we’ve seen many players (James) Milner for example, they change his position,” Bassey said.

“Sometimes he plays centre midfield, sometimes he plays on the left. It just depends who you are playing against and what the manager wants from you.”

Bassey played the majority of the 2021/22 season for Rangers as a centre-back but he has been used predominantly as a left-back under new Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro.

The 22-year-old shone in the centre of the defence for Rangers, putting in an impressive outing in the final of the UEFA Europa League against German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.
