GOP senator Lindsey Graham is seeking to soothe the tensions between former US President Donald Trump and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell before the 2022 midterm elections.
According to two GOP senators, Graham has recently told his colleagues that the former president has admitted in their private conversations that McConnell has “helped” him at key moments during his presidency.
“Lindsey was with the president this last weekend. From what I understand Trump said something complimentary about Mitch,” one of the senators told The Hill.
The South Carolina senator, who played golf with Trump over the weekend, has reportedly demanded the ex-president to work with McConnell and other Republicans on winning back the Senate in the midterm elections, instead of bashing each other in public statements.

This comes a day after the US media reported that Trump is trying to depose McConnell as the Senate Republican leader by supporting his contender.
“Trump has spoken recently with senators and allies about trying to depose Mr. McConnell and whether any Republicans are interested in mounting a challenge,” read a report by the Wall Street Journal, citing “people familiar with the conversations.”
McConnell has distanced himself from Trump since he incited his supporters to invade the Capitol in the wake of his loss in the 2020 presidential election, after which now-President Joe Biden emerged the victor.
McConnell even called Trump “morally responsible” for provoking the deadly Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol to overturn the election results.
