According to a study, Poverty in USA kills ten times more people in the US as of 2019 than from bullets.
A study by the University of California said that poverty killed almost 10 times more people in the US than other deaths in 2019.
An article from the University of California which was published in April in the Journal of the American Medical Association emphasizes that in 2019, poverty in USA killed about 183,000 people.
According to this analysis, poverty is the third most known cause of death in the US after heart disease, cancer and smoking. However, obesity, diabetes, drug overdose, suicide, and homicide are among the other common causes of death in the US.
David Brady, author of the study and professor of public policy at the University of California, says: “Poverty kills more people in America than Alzheimer, accidents, heart stroke and diabetes combined.”
He asserted that “poverty killed nearly 10 times more people in 2019 than all the deaths in America combined.”
Poverty in USA is deadlier than others
According to the findings of this research, the poor in the US, whose income is less than 50% of the median income in the United States, have a higher risk of death than citizens with sufficient and reasonable income.
This research emphasizes that religious, ethnic and racial minorities in the US are more vulnerable to poverty than other sections of US society and have lower life expectancies than other US citizens.

On the other hand, the New York Times published a report on the issue of permanent poverty in USA and the accumulation of wealth and prosperity for the rich in this country, stating that a third of the people in this country live in families whose annual income is less than $55,000, and experiencing severe financial problems.
In 2021, one out of every 25 American citizens aged 65 and older was in absolute poverty, according to the United States Poverty Index. This means that they must at least double their income to get out of poverty.
It is worth noting that in 2019, at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the rate of child poverty in the US was almost double that of many countries such as Canada, South Korea and Germany.

The New York Times report says: It is not possible to eliminate poverty in USA, because many citizens of this country have been suffering from it for a long time. Americans largely defend tax breaks for the wealthy, and conveniently ignore anti-poverty, and hunger-alleviation programs.
The US government builds and defends special communities, enclosing the poor and forcing them to live in isolated places without amenities.
Most Americans, whether liberal or conservative, now believe that the American people live in poverty because they face many obstacles and challenges in life in order to achieve prosperity and security. They say that many of these barriers and challenges are created by us or we help perpetuate them whether we want to or not, resulting in the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.
The governments that have come to power in America, whether they are Democrats or Republicans, have only claimed to fight against poverty or racism, but in practice, they have deepened the gap between poverty and wealth in American society with their policies. The signs of which are the existence of separate palaces of the poor and the rich in every city in America.
Although America is the world leader in wealth, knowledge, and technology, 40 million of its citizens live in poverty. Of these, 18.5 million people live in extreme poverty and 5.3 million live in absolute poverty.
According to official statistics, 12.7% of Americans live in poverty. Unofficial figures put the figure at 18 percent.
Among members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the US has the highest poverty rate among young people and one of the lowest rates of participation in elections.
