Plateau: at least 16 dead in 2 new attacks

Plateau State in central Nigeria, the scene of a resurgence of deadly clashes between farmers and herders, has seen at least 16 fatalities, according to the army on Thursday.

Disputes and deadly clashes between farming and herding communities over the use of land and water resources frequently take place in Nigeria’s northwestern and central regions.

Six members of a local farmers’ vigilante group were killed by gunmen in the Riyom district on Tuesday in the most recent violence, and ten more people were killed in an attack in the Mangu neighborhood, according to an army spokesman.

On Wednesday, Major Ishaku Takwa told AFP that “six lives were lost in Riyom.” Ten people were killed in another attack that occurred in some Mangu communities.”

Local Mangu South MP Bala Fwangje reported that 14 people had died nearby. “We now know that 14 people were killed, homes were destroyed, and property was set on fire. Mr. Fwangje stated,” I have not yet received all the details.

More than 200 people have died in fighting between Berom farming communities and Fulani herding communities in the Riyom, Barkin Ladi, and Mangu regions since May.
The repeated murders that were followed by retaliation and the lack of effective justice have encouraged the growth of a more serious criminal element in the area, with gangs conducting raids on villages, killing villagers by the dozen, and kidnapping people for ransom.

These violent acts are just one of many security issues that President Bola Tinubu, who is in charge of the most populous nation in Africa and the largest economy on the continent, must deal with.

However, the previous administration under Buhari was mostly overshadowed with insecurity in different parts of the country, some of which was said to have been carried out by some security agencies themselves leading to a national protest called ‘END SARS’.
