Saudi Arabia’s terrible human rights record under bin Salman

Since Crown Prince bin Salman assumed control of state affairs in 2017, according to a prominent opposition figure, the scale of human rights violations in the Persian Gulf kingdom has dramatically increased, and the vicious persecution of dissidents now extends to their families and close friends.

The Arabian Peninsula Opposition bloc’s leader, Hamza al-Shakhouri, stated that the Riyadh regime has a terrible track record of arbitrary detentions, illegal imprisonment, various forms of physical and mental torture, discrimination, illegal executions, and sham trials.

“In Saudi Arabia, the judiciary has no independence at all, and the House of Saud has complete control over the court system.” Anything that is proposed by the legislature or the executive branch must be approved by the monarch. Since the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was established in 1932, this has always been the case,” he told IRNA.

Shakhouri went on to say, “The trend has, however, become significantly worse at present.” In the past, political opponents and dissidents’ families were not targeted by Saudi authorities. However, opposition figures’ spouses, children, parents, and siblings are now subject to repression.

“The extent of crackdown has significantly widened and affected all regions of the country, all tribes, religions, and strata of the society” since King Salman assumed the throne on January 23, 2015, and bin Salman became heir to the throne two years later.

The majority of people have suffered greatly as a result of oppression and illegal, immoral, and inhumane acts, and the situation continues to deteriorate. The Saudi opposition leader stated, “The sweeping campaign of repression against independent dissidents and activists has reached the point where one may risk his life by writing a sentence, publishing a post on Twitter, or re-posting a tweet that is deemed to be critical of the government.”

Shakhouri cited the high rate of executions in Saudi Arabia, stating that the kingdom has executed nearly 200 activists, dissidents, and religious scholars in the past seven years.

The Saudi dissident said in another part of his speech that the social and religious conservatism of Saudi society means that a lot of people are strongly opposed to the MbS’s much-hyped social reform plan.

Shakhouri continued by stating that world powers and arrogant nations do not care about anything other than their own interests, so it would not be prudent to rely on the international community to defend the rights of oppressed nations.

He stated, “Everyone knows today that Saudi rulers are a bunch of thugs and autocrats, and that their political system is a dictatorial one that is detached from modern principles and norms.”

The nation holds no elections at all. Shakhouri stated, “All three branches of the government have no independence and are completely under the king’s command and control.”

The Saudi activist also mentioned the dire circumstances in which Shia Muslims live in Saudi Arabia. She said that members of the religious community are subjected to a variety of forms of restriction, discrimination, repression, and neglect, and that their fundamental rights have been flagrantly violated for the past thirty years.

Shakhouri said that because both the Riyadh and Tel Aviv regimes were established by the United Kingdom, they are in close contact with one another when it comes to secret relations.

“Both regimes were founded by Britain. They were designed to divide Arabs and Muslims, control the region’s resources and infrastructure, and impede their progress. He stated, “We believe that the House of Saud will fall in tandem with the downfall of the Israeli regime.”

Shakhouri said that Saudi Arabia doesn’t want to be known as the one who normalized diplomatic ties between Muslim countries and Israel. However, Saudi Arabia is trying to get countries in Southeast Asia, like Indonesia and Malaysia, to do the same.
