U.S. bad policy brings Saudi Arabia closer to china, former united state secretary of state proclaims in response to Xi Jinping’s visits to Saudi Arabia.
Mike Pompeo: Former United State Secretary of State said that China’s President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to Saudi Arabia, indicating warming ties at a time of heightened tensions between the US and China, was the result of the current U.S. “bad policy.”
President Xi Jinping had a ground-style welcome upon his arrival to Saudi Arabia last week, a historic trip that stands in stark contrast to the warm reception U.S. President Joe Biden received when he visited the kingdom earlier this year.
Pompeo, Speaking to the American multinational conservative cable news television channel Fox News Sunday, accused the Biden administration of flawed policies that had angered Saudi Arabia, a U.S. ally in West Asia, and prompted it to hedge its ties with Washington.
“When you won’t be partners with your friends and your allies, and you offend them, and you simply won’t do anything to push back against your adversaries, like Xi Jinping, you see exactly this kind of hedging behavior,” Pompeo said.
In a move against the administration of former President Donald Trump, which has closely aligned its West Asia policy with Saudi Arabia, Biden has campaigned to treat Saudi Arabia as a “pariah” in the international arena. Relations between the two nations soured over oil exploration, human rights, and other issues during Mr. Biden’s presidency.
Pompeo said that as the Biden administration alienated Saudi Arabia, it “also became more lenient with China,” which the previous administration recognized as the “singular greatest external threat by far” to the United States.
“Doing these things hurts Americans across the country. What we’ve seen in the Kingdom this week is a direct result of bad politics in America,” Pompeo added.
“You’ve got to stick with friends, you got to stay with your partners, and you must push back against your adversaries, or your friends will begin to hedge. Right, they’ll go make friendships to protect themselves if they can’t count on America to be a good partner and friend around the world,” Pompeo emphasized.
President Xi Jinping’s three-day visit to Saudi ended with 40 agreements reached between the two countries. Including a memorandum of understanding between Saudi Aramco and China’s Shandong Energy Group to explore ways to cooperate in oil refining and explore petrochemical opportunities in China.
Riyadh and Beijing want to underscore the “importance of stability in global oil markets,” according to a joint statement released by Saudi Arabia-China media, noting that Saudi Arabia is a reliable oil exporter for Chinese partners.
