UK: Crowd boos out of Downing Street as Boris Johnson resigns as PM

Crowds outside Downing Street in central London booed and sang a remix of the Bay City Rollers’ song Bye Bye Baby before UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s resignation speech on July 7.

Footage posted by Twitter user @squattingtoad shows a large crowd of people outside the prime minister’s residence prior to Johnson’s announcement on Thursday afternoon.

The crowd were also heard singing along to a remixed version of Bay City Rollers’ Bye Bye Baby, with the word “baby” replaced with “Boris.”

Johnson resigned his position as leader of the Conservative Party on July 7. The resignation followed that of 59 MPs from the government since Tuesday.

According to a report, the crowds standing outside Downing Street gathered to boo Boris Johnson as he made his resignation speech on Thursday (7 July).

After days of turmoil in the Tory party, Mr Johnson announced he was stepping down as leader, but will stay on as prime minister until his replacement is elected.

As he addressed the nation in front of his closest allies, his family and journalists gathered outside No 10, those on the other side of the Downing Street gates tried to drown out his words with a chorus of boos.
