Ramadan rituals in Kashmir + photos

Table clothes are spread on different corners of the mosque: old and young are volunteering to help prepare for the Iftar time, the time the sunsets, and the time of breaking the fast.

Fayaz Ahmad Punjabi has been organizing Iftar each Ramadan since 2014. He intends to fulfill one of the main values of Islam: equality.

Here, the holy month of Ramadan is observed by the majority of people. Besides attending daily prayers, the Muslim men and women regularly go to mosques for Quran recitations.

The Muslim-majority Kashmir has witnessed decades of political instability and economic slump, due to continued tensions in the region. Although all these difficulties have resulted in poverty, most people here are fully committed to their Islamic obligations during this month.

Meanwhile, a large number of non-governmental organizations actively work for the poorer and the weaker people of this region, assisting them through charity.

In Muslim majority Kashmir, Ramadan rejuvenates hope. Young and old actively participate in different endeavors to attain greater rewards.
