Insecurity: Tension in Delta community as gunmen kill vigilante chairman

There is tension in Jeddo Community in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State following the killing of the community’s vigilante chairman, Mr. Jude Akiru (also known as Scosco).

The deceased was reportedly killed by no fewer than gunmen numbering at Oil Junction, around 2am Friday.

Witnesses said the late vigilante chairman received a call that some hoodlums were operating in the area and quickly drove from his house to the crime scene.

He was said to have been asked to put off his torch light by the gunmen but refused and was shot multiple times by the gunmen.

A community source said some group of boys had gone to one shopping plaza, WWW Golden to steal that night before the killing.

Youths of the community were said to have blocked the major road since 6am when news of the gruesome murder broke.

The community leader also asked all residents of Jeddo community to meet at the town hall.

The remains of the deceased have since been deposited in a morgue.

Security operatives, including men of the Delta Hawk, were seen trying to quell the situation.

When contacted, Acting Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe confirmed the incident.

It was earlier reported that, there was serious tension in Delta State on Sunday as gunmen shot to death two members of the Ovwian Community Vigilante group in Udu, Udu Local Government Area.

Details as to why the vigilante men were killed were still sketchy at the time of this report.

It is not also clear if the gunmen took away the rifles belonging to the local security men.

The remains of the deceased men have been deposited at the morgue by the Police.

The Ovwian/Aladja Divisional Police Officer, CSP Mohammed Mu’Azu declined comments on the matter. He said,”I have already communicated to the State Command. You know I don’t speak on such issues.”

When contacted for comments, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya confirmed the report in a telephone chat with Our Correspondent in Warri.

The Police Image Maker said, “It’s true” but didn’t give details on the matter.

It would be recalled that a vigilante man shot an Ijaw girl dead in the presence of her mother in the same Community barely a week to this incident.
