According to reports, a US Army soldier crossed into North Korea from the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), this incident was revealed by the military organization that operates in the region.
The United Nations Command, a military organization that operates in the DMZ and Joint Security Area (JSA) dividing the Korean Peninsula, declared on Tuesday that a US citizen had crossed the border, according to local media.
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) was entered by a US citizen who was on a JSA orientation tour without permission, the UN Command tweeted. “We think he’s being held by the DPRK right now.”
The man is a private in the US Army, according to the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper in South Korea.
The man who fled is a US Army soldier, according to anonymous government sources quoted by The Washington Post.
One of the sources told the newspaper that the man was recently supposed to board a flight to the US, but he never did. They continued, “This was a deliberate decision on the part of the service member to cross.”
According to reports, the US military is trying to locate the eluding soldier and determine his condition.
An observer on the same JSA orientation tour saw a male member of her group run across the border as they went to the Joint Security Area, according to NK News.
Mikaela Johansson of Sweden wrote, “To our right, we hear a loud HA-HA-HA and one guy from OUR GROUP that has been with us all day-runs in between two of the buildings and over to the other side!!”.
“It took everyone a moment to process what had happened, and then we were told to enter Freedom House, go through it, and then immediately run back to our military bus. Johansson reportedly stated that the visitors to the JSA had received advice from the authorities not to post pictures of the incident online.
Soldiers from the North and South stand facing each other in the JSA, also referred to as the “Truce Village,” which is located inside the DMZ.
The location of diplomatic negotiations between the representatives of the two sides is the DMZ.
