US-NATO, Ukraine uncertain on membership, zelensky expresses disappointment

Zelensky has shown dissatisfaction and stated that he does not know when he will join NATO; as the US lead NATO members’ disputes on Ukraine’s membership while still at war with Russia.

The lack of a concrete timeline for Ukraine’s potential accession to the NATO military alliance has angered Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, leaving him frustrated.

During a gathering, Zelensky explicitly said that NATO is essentially losing a “bargaining opportunity” with Russia by detaining Ukraine’s membership indefinitely.

Zelensky stated, “Uncertainty is another word for weakness, and I want to say directly at this conference – we are disappointed with the lack of readiness of the member states to include Ukraine in this alliance. If Ukraine had been admitted, NATO would have been able to engage in direct negotiations with Russia to end the conflict, and Russia would have been compelled to do so.

In addition, Zelensky stated, “We believe that Russia will engage in more terrorist activities as a result of the member states’ indecision to admit Ukraine to NATO.”

In Vilnius, the nation’s capital and gateway to the Baltic region of Europe, the NATO conference got underway on Tuesday. Ukraine, which has been trying to join this alliance for the past eight years, anticipated being accepted at this conference. But that hope has once more been dashed.

While some of the alliance’s members advocated for Ukraine to join NATO, the majority of significant states, including the United States, have shown no interest in doing so. The leader of the alliance, US President Joe Biden, has not even agreed to set a deadline for when Ukraine will be allowed to join. However, they have stated that NATO will keep assisting Ukraine militarily so long as the conflict persists.

NATO and the EU will support Ukraine’s infrastructure and economic reconstruction if it wins the war, according to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who represents one of the alliance’s most significant nations. But Zelensky’s disappointment was too great for these concessions to make up for.
