Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called for the UN Security Council to be expanded to include more non-Western nations, to challenge Western hegemony.
In order to counter the dominance of the West, Lavrov stated at a press conference on Friday that the 15-member Council would be expanded to include more countries from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
The top Russian diplomat stated that “the vast majority of the world does not want to live by Western norms.”
The Security Council, a crucial UN decision-making body, has come under increasing pressure for reform in recent years.
The Security Council does not have a seat for regional players like Iran, Brazil, Germany, India, Japan, or South Africa.
For no other reason than that they supported the victorious side in the Second World War, Britain, and France are permanent members with veto power.
Many people think that because all five of the Security Council’s permanent members are nuclear-armed states, they have created a kind of exclusive group that allows their power to be unchecked.
In other parts of his remarks, Lavrov claimed that the West, particularly the United States, had begun an aggressive campaign to stop Russia and China from becoming independent powers in a multi-polar world.
Using what he called the Anglo-Saxon Nazi regime in Kyiv, Lavrov claimed that the West has been waging a long-running war against Russia in order to achieve that goal. The United States and Great Britain are referred to as “Anglo-Saxons” in the Kremlin.
Russia’s two stated justifications for starting the war in Ukraine last year were the demilitarization and de-Nazification of Ukraine.
Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of the Russian Security Council, recently charged that the West was planning to “destroy and dismember” Russia and claimed that the Western powers were following in the footsteps of Adolf Hitler, the leader of the Nazi Party.
The US and its Western allies have been giving Kyiv military supplies worth tens of billions of dollars ever since the Ukraine conflict began. In addition to tanks, drones, armored vehicles, and communication systems, reports also suggest that F-16 fighter jets may be supplied.
Along with other Western weapons, long-range attack drones have been given to Ukrainian forces engaged in combat with Russian troops.
Russia has repeatedly claimed that the Western countries as a whole are fighting it on its behalf over Ukraine and has warned that the conflict may grow into a much larger conflict.
