Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, has voiced deep concerns over the escalating tensions in southern Lebanon.
Following a tragic incident on Friday in which three children lost their lives due to attacks in the southern suburbs of Beirut, Borrell called for an immediate ceasefire between the Hezbollah movement and Israel.
In a statement from the EU, Borrell highlighted the urgency of establishing a ceasefire along the border, asserting that it is just as crucial as achieving a ceasefire in Gaza.
He indicated that this matter will be a focal point of discussions among international officials during the upcoming 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The UN General Assembly is set to convene from Tuesday and will run until Saturday, October 7. Topics under consideration include not only the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon but also the ongoing war in Ukraine and the situation in Sudan.
The call for a ceasefire comes amid heightened tensions in the region, following a series of attacks on Friday in which the Israeli military targeted buildings in the southern suburbs of Beirut, resulting in the death of 45 individuals, among them three children.
In a retaliatory action, Hezbollah announced late yesterday that it had launched dozens of rockets at the Ramat David Air Base, located east of Haifa.
This air base is known to be one of the primary facilities for the Israeli military, housing two air battalions equipped with F16C and F16D fighter jets, as well as drone air battalions and a helicopter unit.
