We are writing this letter to urge the United Nations to immediately intervene to end Israel’s war crimes and brutal atrocities in its attacks on Gaza and the West Bank.
We are sending you this letter when the Israeli war machine has so far killed more than 3,500 Palestinians in Gaza and injured more than 12,000. Most of the victims are civilians.
In the West Bank, about 70 people have been killed and 1,300 injured by Israeli forces, and most of them civilians. During the attack on the densely populated Gaza Strip, Israel has deliberately violated international law by targeting civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings, schools, hospitals, ambulances, mosques, streets filled with fleeing people, and food factories.
It has also directly targeted civilian gatherings, for example, on 10/17/2023, it bombed the Baptist Hospital in Gaza, where displaced residents were sheltering, and on 10/13/2023, it A convoy carrying civilians towards southern Gaza was bombed.
Additionally, according to several human rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, Israel has used white phosphorus in Gaza and Lebanon. White phosphorus, which is illegal to use, can indiscriminately burn homes and cause serious injury to civilians when exploded in the air in densely populated urban areas. White phosphorus burns at temperatures over 800 degrees Celsius, high enough to melt metal.
According to UN workers and officials themselves, there is no safe place in Gaza. Gaza is under total siege and constant bombardment.
Hospitals are flooded with wounded and dead, medical supplies are low, electricity and water have been cut off by Israel, and food supplies are dwindling due to the siege. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is depressing for civilians.
It is absolutely clear that Israel has grossly violated international law by abandoning its obligation to respect the proportionate use of force and not to differentiate between civilians and soldiers.
