US: at average this year 2 mass shooting per day – report

According to data compiled by Gun Violence Archive (GVA), the US is currently on pace to equal or surpass the previous record for the most mass shootings in a year, which was set in 2021 with a total of 690.

The US has experienced an average of two mass shootings per day this year, for a total of 419 incidents, according to data from GVA, the online news outlet Axios reported on Monday.

The report went on to say that there had only been 401 mass shootings by this point in 2021, with a daily average of 1.9 mass shootings for the entire year.

There are still 153 days left in 2023, but already this year, 25,000 people have died as a result of gun violence in US cities.

According to the GVA data, this equates to an average of 118 fatalities per day, with over four teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17 and almost one child between the ages of 0 and 11 dying each day.

More than 22,000 additional people, including more than 400 children and 2,400 teenagers, have been shot this year.

The report continues by pointing out that these statistics do not accurately capture the full extent of the epidemic of gun violence in the US because they do not account for the thousands of parents who have lost children or the thousands of families whose numbers have been permanently diminished.

It further stated that the statistics “cannot adequately highlight the thousands of life-altering injuries caused by gunshot wounds or the hundreds of thousands of dollars that gun violence victims rack up in hospital bills.”

A mass shooting, according to GVA, occurs when at least four people are shot and either killed or injured, excluding the shooter.

As a result of this incident, during his presidential campaign, Biden pledged to reinstate an assault weapons ban, create a voluntary gun buyback program, and send a bill to Congress to repeal liability protections for gun manufacturers and close background check loopholes.
