Reps call for staff inspection, investigation of prison corruption

The Comptroller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) was urged by the House of Representatives to audit all staff members and review the service codes of conduct for inmates and staff.

The motion by Ugonna Ozurigbo (PDP-Imo) was unanimously adopted at a plenary meeting on Wednesday, prompting the call.

He recalled Ahmad Lawan, the former president of the Senate, calling the Kuje incident an inside job.

Three jailbreaks “between January and July 2022 in Mandala, Kwara,” according to Mr. Ozirigno, have him concerned. Correctional facility Agbor will open on January 2, 2022, followed by Delta in May and Kuje Prison in July. Inmates broke out of these jailbreaks, and each time, the building was set on fire. 64 terrorists connected to the Islamic State were among the 879 prisoners who escaped during the Kuje prison break in July 2021. ”.

Mr. Ozurigno, who moved the motion earlier, said that security issues in Nigeria were now widespread and commonplace.

“Previously, the only way to witness an attack on a security location was on television, particularly when it came to jailbreaks in Nigerian prisons. Jailbreaks in 2004 (1), 2007 (1), 2010 (1), 2012 (1), 2013 (2), 2014 (5), 2020 (6), 2021 (6), and 2022 are now frequent examples of its occurrences in real life, the lawmaker said.

Mr. Ozurigbo cited the recent letter from resentful prison staff to President Bola Tinubu as concerning. The letter revealed that officials borrow money from prisoners.

According to him, this supports the public’s concern regarding claims of corruption and poor facility management, which are fueling insider-job claims to the attacks in the nation.

According to the lawmaker, collecting money under any pretext has consequences and maybe a case of “who pays the piper calls the tune.”. He said that the House of Representatives intervention would remove the cankerworms, which could have led to serious laxities, and eventually bring sanity back to the nation’s correctional services and operations.

The NCS must be investigated and a report must be submitted for further legislative action within three weeks, according to Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu’s directive to the Committee on Reformation Institutions (when it is established).

On July 5, 2022, there was an assault on the Kuje Prison in Abuja. Including Boko Haram terrorists, over 889 inmates from Kuje prisons were reported to have escaped, according to a statement from the NCS.

The official statement states that 443 inmates were recaptured and 443 escaped after the attack, leaving 559 prisoners still housed in the prisons.

Nigeria has broken out of 20 prisons in the last seven years.
