An act of extortionate and provocation, N617/litre petrol pump price- PDP

The N617 per liter fuel price that the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration approved, is an act of extortionate and provocative according to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The party attributed the price increase to APC’s alleged poor management and “exhibition of extreme insensitivity and callousness towards Nigerians” in a statement released on Wednesday by its national spokesman, Debo Ologunagba.

The Party noticed that the increase was making the already dire economic circumstances under the APC worse and that, if not stopped, it could lead to a very serious crisis in the nation.

The APC administration has abandoned the welfare of Nigerians, which is the primary purpose of government under Section 14(2)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), according to the statement, which continued: “It is appalling that instead of seeking ways to stabilize and grow the economy, the APC administration has abandoned the welfare of Nigerians, which is the primary purpose of Government under Section 14(2)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).”

The main opposition party expressed alarm that the APC was “running Nigeria’s economy into a ditch with its poorly thought out, badly planned and hurriedly-executed policies, with the value of the naira rapidly plunging, businesses and production shutting down; citizens losing their means of livelihood, commercial and social activities crippled, with millions of families no longer able to afford their daily needs as the costs of food, medication, and other essential goods and services rise”.

“APC’s insensitivity, roiling corruption, scandalous illiteracy, and inability to effectively stabilize and manage the country’s economy is to blame for the dire situation we are in today.

“In fact, this is not the country that Nigerians yearned for after the dreadful, agonizing, and inhumane eight years of the Buhari-led APC administration as the situation has recently gotten progressively worse with no sign of improvement in sight.”

The PDP rejected the APC’s “insensitive and lame argument” that market forces determine fuel prices and compared Nigeria’s fuel prices to those in other nations with strong economies, functional infrastructure, and a variety of affordable alternative energy sources.
“Our Party insists that the N617 per litre of fuel is excessive, unacceptable, and cannot be justified under any pretext,” the statement continued. Given our nation’s economic potentials and prospects, this is especially true.

Even with the elimination of subsidies for petroleum products, the PDP continues to hold that with clever, transparent, and innovative management of resources, economic potentials, national comparative advantage, and expanded value chain in refining capacity, fuel shouldn’t sell for more than N150 per liter in Nigeria.”
