US looting: Syria call on European Parliament to condemn US theft on its resources

The Syrian Parliament has called the most recent report by the European Parliament on the humanitarian situation in Syria “false” and urged the organization to be “objective” and denounce Washington’s theft of Syrian resources instead.

The European Parliament’s June report, according to a statement released on Sunday by the Syrian Parliament, contains “inaccuracies and distortions of facts” meant to support certain Western governments’ policies that are detrimental to the interests of the Syrian people.

“If the European Parliament wants to be objective in its humanitarian perspective, it should condemn the illegal exploitation of Syria’s energy resources and agricultural wealth by US military forces,” it said.

Under the guise of combating the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group, the US has been deploying troops and military hardware in Syria since 2014 without Damascus’ consent or a UN mandate.

By working with local terrorist organizations and anti-Damascus militants, the US military has illegally occupied Syria with nearly 1,000 troops, taken control of its oil fields, and stolen its crude supplies and wheat to send to its bases in Iraq.

The parliament continued by discussing the devastating effects of sanctions imposed unilaterally by Western governments on Syria in a number of industries, including transportation, water services, healthcare, and education.

Such actions go against both international law and the United Nations Charter, it continued.
The so-called exemptions and exceptions from these sanctions under the guise of humanitarian goals, it was claimed, are merely “lip service” and appear to have no impact.

The parliament argued that humanitarian agencies as well as donor states have not yet provided disaster relief to Syria, despite the six-month sanctions exemption that was adopted in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck the Turkey-Syria border region in late February not having been put into effect.

In order to put pressure on the EU to immediately and unconditionally lift all sanctions imposed against Syrians, it was demanded that the European Parliament take a fresh approach that complies with both international law and humanitarian principles.

In its June report, the EU asserted that it aids the Syrian people in accordance with international law, the ideas of impartiality, neutrality, and non-discrimination.

Furthermore, it asserted that by repeatedly obstructing, hindering, and diverting aid, the Syrian government has politicized and used it as a political tool.

Sanctions imposed on Syria by the US have been in place since 1979. After 2011, when the Arab nation found itself in the grip of widespread foreign-backed militancy and terrorism, Washington and its Western allies particularly tightened their economic sanctions and restrictions on Damascus.

The Caesar Act, which targeted anyone and any company that took part directly or indirectly in Syria’s reconstruction efforts, was passed in 2019, which resulted in an even greater escalation of the sanctions.
