The BBC in the UK has, in accordance with a network representative, been “very seriously” looking into allegations that one of its presenters paid a teen for sexual images.
A BBC spokesperson said in a statement issued late on Friday: “We treat any allegations very seriously, and we have procedures in place to deal with them promptly.”.
A “well-known” BBC presenter was allegedly accused of paying a teen more than £35,000 in exchange for explicit pictures, according to a Sun report.
When the payments started, the teen was reportedly 17 years old. However, neither the identity of the presenter nor that of the teenager has been made public.
The Sun claims that the teenager’s family complained to the BBC on May 19, 2023.
It claimed that the victim, who is now 20 years old, had used the payments received to buy illegal drugs.
His mother exclaimed, “I feel sick when I see him on television.” “I accuse this BBC employee of destroying my child’s life. “Taking my child’s innocence and using it to buy crack cocaine that could kill my child.”
In the meantime, BBC presenters are attempting to clear their names one by one after repeatedly denying claims that they paid teenagers for explicit images.”
Former BBC presenters Jimmy Savile and James Stuart Hall had faced allegations of sexual abuse in the past, and those reports had been harshly critical of the UK media company for failing to take action to stop the alleged incidents.
Savile and Hall were able to sexually abuse close to 100 people for decades thanks to serious failings at the BBC, according to 2016 reports from an independent inquiry looking into the abuse cases.
However, BBC Africa once release a sexual assault report on how a woman was abused in a tea firm in Kenya, and how several female legislators in Kenya’s parliament have as well condemned the actions of the perpetrators and called for quick action following the exposure.
