In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria, a disinformation narrative is spreading on Twitter that the earthquake is the fault of the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) in Alaska, US, conceived over 30 years ago. It’s a project that investigates the ionosphere — the boundary between the Earth’s atmosphere and the vacuum of space.
The program pulses a signal into the ionosphere which is then studied. But for years now, it is believed that the Research Program can trigger earthquakes and extreme weather events.
The death toll from the earthquake in Turkey and Syria has crossed 23 thousand. But in the meanwhile a new controversy has started. It is being said on social media that the earthquake has come because of America’s conspiracy. It was he who created havoc in Turkey by using his weather technology. American research center HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) is being blamed.
Trolls are also posting videos with it, in which lightning struck during the earthquake. It is being said that lightning strike in an earthquake is not a normal phenomenon. America did this artificially so that Turkey could be punished. But why the punishment? That is because Turkey refused to follow the path shown by the western countries. All such allegations are being leveled by social media users on West. HAARP is under siege.

It is an American project located in an observatory in Alaska that studies the upper atmosphere (ionosphere) with the help of radio transmitters. Cloud seeding is believed to have been used by the US during the Vietnam War to enhance the monsoon. UN has warned long ago
Countries can use weather modification technology against each other, on which the United Nations had been alerted long ago. In October 1987 itself, the UN drafted ENMOD (Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Techniques). This draft says that no country can disturb another country through weather.
Although the warning may be being ignored, it cannot be denied. The Chinese spy balloon that was recently shot down in the American sky is also being told that it was not a spy, but a balloon sent to tamper with the weather.
According to a report, allegations about HAARP are not limited to the outreaches of obscure fringe groups. In 2010, the then-president of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad officially told the UN that he believed floods in Pakistan were the fault of the HAARP program. The same year, Hugo Chávez, the former president of Venezuela, also blamed the Chilean and Haiti earthquakes on the program.
Now, Twitter community also believe the same, as so many tweets showed up this week, suggesting the U.S. and other NATO countries knew about the earthquake before it happened and evacuated their embassies.
Marc Owen Jones found 300,000 tweets and 130,000 accounts tweeting about it — far more, he said, than he expected.
Those tweeting about HAARP and linking it to the earthquake were people of different professions, activists, right-wing, even QAnon and MAGA-linked U.S. accounts. Many are suggesting that NATO was using the earthquake to punish Erdogan for his ongoing relationship with Russia.
