Saudi blockade prevents entry of medicines, equipment for kidney failure patients

Patients with kidney failure are unable to access medications and equipment due to Saudi blockade. One will be prompt to ask why are medical equipment being prevented from entering Yemen? This is life-saving equipment not a weapon, a bomb detonator, or any other potentially hazardous device. It’s nothing more than a filter for a dialysis machine that cleans the blood of people with chronic kidney disease.

We attended a Yemeni Ministry of Health press conference in Sana’a where it was stated that the Saudi-imposed blockade is causing a national health crisis by preventing the entry of kidney failure patients’ medications and equipment.

According to the health ministry, approximately 5000 dialysis patients are at risk of death without treatment.

Kayid Ahmed is one of the dialysis patients receiving treatment at Althorah hospital right now. According to him, he and other patients have not received the required number of dialysis treatments each week due to a lack of supplies.

However, obtaining the required three treatments per week for Ahmed and the other 5,000 patients who share his condition is currently nearly impossible. There is a severe shortage of this mixed solution, which powers the dialysis machine. The Kidney Disease Center at Al-Thawra Hospital will have to close by the end of January unless they receive dialysis filters and the solution necessary to operate dialysis machines. There is only enough for two more weeks. Approximately 5,000 patients’ lives will be at risk if that occurs.

The Yemeni army has repeatedly stated that it will be forced to take military action if the Saudi-imposed blockade is not lifted. The siege must be ended so that the nation can receive the medicine and other supplies it needs.
