The Nigeria Police Force has assured citizens of its commitment to justice, equity and fairness in the fight to enshrine peace and harmony in society.
The Commissioner for Police in Cross River State Command, Aminu Alhassan made the pledge at his maiden press briefing with journalists in Calabar, the capital city.
Upholding rights
Alhassan appreciated the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Usman Alkali Baba, for the trust and confidence reposed on him to continue from where the former stopped before his new posting.
He stated, “I want to reiterate my resolve to align with the vision and mission of the Inspector General of Police among which includes, respect for fundamental human rights, policing in line with the international best practices, zero tolerance for crime and criminality, and his initiative of Operation Restore Peace in our respective area of responsibility.”
The Police Commissioner urged all those resident in Cross River State to support the Nigeria Police, noting that policing for enhanced security was the collective responsibility of everyone.
“I call on the Cross River people, eminent stakeholders, community and youths leaders, spiritual heads and traditional institutions to see security as a collective venture and not to leave it in the hands of the police alone,”Alhassan said.
According to him, the command under his watch would conscientiously operate on the principles of justice, equity, fairness as enshrined in the established laws of the federation, which is of utmost importance.
“The herculean nature of our job is not and will never be an excuse in carrying out our constitutional mandate of protection of lives and property, prevention of crime and enforcement of law and order as required,” the CP stated.

He further appealed to the people to share reliable information with the police and other security agencies with the assurance of protection.
Weapons recovery
The Police Commissioner disclosed that in less than 24 hours in the state, the command’s patrol team at the Obudu area command intercepted a suspect conveying some rifles and live ammunition concealed in a traveling bag on a motorcycle.
Alhassan stated, “items recovered in his possession were one chain of GPMG (General Purpose Machine Gun) live ammunition and Three hundred and seventy-five, 375 AK47 live ammunition.”
He vowed to thoroughly investigate the case and ensure that others involved are prosecuted in line with the law.
