Unlawful US sanctions worsening humanitarian crisis in Syria

A UN envoy complains that unilateral, illegal US sanctions are making the humanitarian crisis in Syria more severe.

The “illegitimate and inhumane” sanctions imposed by the United States and its Western allies are escalating the humanitarian crisis in Syria, according to the country’s permanent representative to the United Nations.

The remarks were made by Bassam al-Sabbagh on Monday during a session of the United Nations Security Council in New York on the topic of “Purpose and Principles of the UN Charter in the Maintenance of International Peace and Security and Effective Pluralism through the Defense of the Principles of the United Nations Charter.”

Sabbagh stated, “Foreign forces, who are illegitimately present on our soil, are plundering Syria’s national wealth and resources.”

He continued, “Unilateral, illegitimate, inhumane, and immoral sanctions imposed on ordinary people are aggravating the humanitarian crisis in Syria.”

The Syrian envoy issued a warning that the bans continue to have an impact on all aspects of ordinary people’s lives and have caused a significant number of people to become internally displaced and homeless, clearly in violation of the UN Charter’s principles and goals.

Since 1979, the United States has imposed sanctions on Syria. After 2011, when the Arab nation found itself in the grip of widespread militancy and terrorism supported by foreign governments, Washington and its Western allies particularly enacted economic sanctions and restrictions against Damascus.

The Caesar Act, which was passed in 2019 and targeted any individual or business that participated in Syria’s reconstruction efforts either directly or indirectly, increased the severity of the sanctions even further.

Sabbagh drew attention to the fact that certain Western nations have been exploiting the UN and its institutions in order to advance their antagonistic agendas and destructive policies against Damascus for more than a decade.

He said that Syria has lost its genuine pluralism over the past ten years and that urgent revision of UN mechanisms is needed.

The Syrian representative expressed that the survey of the UN working techniques would guarantee the advancement of genuine pluralism based on the world body’s Sanctions, improve their proficiency and raise their believability in global circles.

The UN envoy likewise accentuated that saving genuine pluralism requires rebuilding current UN bodies, on top of which is the extension of the Security Board to mirror the new real factors concerning global relations, and changing the Worldwide Financial Asset and the World Bank to serve the interests of non-industrial nations.
