Heathrow security staff launch ten-day strike over cost of living crisis

In an effort to demand higher wages in response to skyrocketing inflation, the security staff at Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom have embarked on a 10-day strike, joining several other civil servants and workers in the UK’s various industries.

Following the failure of last-minute negotiations with government officials regarding a pay raise, approximately 1,400 security guards joined the strike that began on Friday.

Workers at British Airways’ exclusive use of Terminal Five of the airport and those in charge of checking imported cargo into the airport are reportedly involved in the strike, according to Unite the Union.

British Airways has had to cancel around 5% of its Easter flights, including 70 flights on Friday alone, as a result of the strike. The airport has warned that some passengers may experience security delays during the strike days.

On Friday, in order to alleviate the situation and provide assistance to passengers, the airport was forced to hire 1,000 additional employees.

The government is putting pressure on the aviation industry to avoid the Easter lines, delays, and cancellations of last year, which were largely caused by staff shortages.

The majority of UK industries, including airports and aviation, are grappling with industrial actions, with hundreds of thousands of workers striking for better pay and conditions amid rising commodity and energy costs.

Everyone is aware that London ranks among the world’s most expensive cities. Additionally, there are individuals who are unable to pay their bills. They are unable to make mortgage payments. Wane King, a regional coordinating officer for Unite the Union, stated, “I’ve heard stories of members acting to take a cold shower in the middle of winter so they can afford to put petrol in the car to come to work.”

When you have a company as powerful and successful as Heathrow Airport, no one should have to live like that. It’s the main way we could do it in light of the fact that the businesses don’t treat it in a serious way enough. He is denying us the necessary increases for our members. As a result, our members have decided to go on strike,” he added.

Heathrow Airport asserts that it offered a ten percent pay increase that was retroactive to January 1 and a one-time payment of more than $1,000. Be that as it may, the deal was dismissed by the labor force as the increment couldn’t match the taking-off expansion of the nation.

Following the nationwide strikes on “budget day,” when unions staged a massive walkout timed to disrupt Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt’s annual budget, about half a million British workers went on strike.

Unions claim that wages have decreased in real terms over the past decade, particularly in the public sector, and that a cost-of-living crisis caused by sharply rising energy and food costs has left many struggling to pay their bills.

There were several strikes at the beginning of 2023, including the health sector over poor payment. In January, Britain’s annual inflation rate was 10.1%. Pay raises, according to the Conservative government, would increase inflation even more.
