UK plans to send tanks to Ukraine ‘will burn’ there: says Russia

Russia warns the West against sending more advanced weapons to the former Soviet republic because such consignments will not “change” the outcome of the war, stating that the tanks Britain plans to send to Ukraine “will burn” there.

At the beginning of the week, it was reported that London was going to send Challenger 2 main battle tanks from the British Army to Ukraine. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak promised to send Kyiv 14 of these tanks and additional advanced artillery systems in the coming weeks during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday, confirming the reports.

The move demonstrated “the UK’s ambition to intensify support” for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, according to Downing Street.

The Kremlin said on Monday that the UK uses Ukraine as a means of achieving what it said were London’s anti-Russian goals.

When asked about the British tanks, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, “They are using this country [Ukraine] as a tool to achieve their anti-Russian goals.” He also warned, “These tanks are burning and will burn just like the rest.”

He said that the new weapons and equipment from countries like Poland and Britain would not change the situation on the ground. Instead, he said, they were an effort to prolong the war, which, in the end, would cause “more problems” for Ukraine.

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched what it refers to as a “special military operation” in Ukraine with the stated intention of “de-Nazifying” the nation. Ukraine has received tens of billions of dollars worth of weaponry, including rocket systems, drones, armored vehicles, and communications systems, as well as waves of unprecedented economic sanctions imposed on Moscow by the United States and Europe since then. The Kremlin has repeatedly warned that Western military assistance and sanctions will only prolong the war.

The new development came after France also said that it would send armored combat vehicles known as wheeled tank destroyers or light tanks, the AMX-10 RC, to Ukraine.

Germany has pledged to send 40 Marder fighting vehicles infantry fighting vehicles within weeks as part of a new phase of coordinated support with Washington, while the United States has stated that it would consider providing Ukraine with Bradley Fighting Vehicles.

In an interview that aired late on Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the war had gained momentum and that he hoped his troops would win more. This came after Moscow said that Russian forces had taken control of the salt-mining town of Soledar in eastern Ukraine after intense fighting.

On January 20, allies of Ukraine are scheduled to meet in Germany’s Ramstein to talk about giving it more weapons.

Moscow: Residences in Dnipro were not hit by Russian missiles.

Peskov also denied Western media reports that a Dnipro, Ukraine, residential complex had been hit by Russian missiles in another part of his remarks.

His statement was made two days after Kyiv claimed that the apartment complex was hit by a significant Russian missile attack that killed at least 40 people and left 30 people missing.

The Russian military does not attack social infrastructure or residential structures. Peskov stated that military targets are the target of either obvious or covert attacks.

In response, Peskov stated that “some representatives of the Ukrainian side” had arrived at the same conclusion and that Ukrainian “anti-aircraft counter-missiles” had intercepted the Russian missile.

Dnipro, Ukraine’s fourth-largest city and home to a million people, is a crucial supply hub for Ukrainian forces in the eastern Donbas region.

Oleksiy Arestovych, who advises the office of the Ukrainian president, said on Saturday evening that after being shot down by Ukrainian air defenses, the Russian missile appeared to have hit the apartment building.

He apologized after the comment caused anger in Ukraine. After that, he retracted his apology posted online and stated that he had made it abundantly clear in his initial remarks that his conclusion was only a preliminary theory.
