In the request, she also wrote that she wanted the name change because “I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form,” reports says.

The request was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court in Santa Monica back in April. Only recently has it made the news after several media reports about the request were published.

The petition, reported first by TMZ, looks to legally change her gender to female as well as her name on a new birth certificate.

Her mother is author Justine Musk. Justine Musk and Elon Musk divorced in 2008, and they share five children.

In a request for comment, Musk told the Daily Beast, “She does not want to be a public figure. I think it is important to defend her right to privacy. Please don’t out someone against their will — it’s not right.”

The Beast reports it sought comment before TMZ reported the petition.

Elon Musk came out in support of the Republican Party in May, a month after his daughter filed the request. Across the country, Republican lawmakers have targeted trans people’s rights to play school sports or even receive gender-affirming health care.

Two years ago, Musk tweeted, “I absolutely support trans, but all these pronouns are an esthetic nightmare.”

Earlier this month, Musk also posted, “we are simultaneously being told that gender differences do not exist and that genders are so profoundly different that irreversible surgery is the only option.”

Communications director for the National LGBTQ Task Force Cathy Renna told the Beast that the organization “would never approve or condone the outing of a young person because they have famous parents.”

“One would hope this would be a wake-up call to Elon Musk, who has a history of making anti-trans and disrespectful comments particularly about pronoun usage,” Renna said. “We hope that she finds support from other family members and knows she has a large community that supports her no matter what.”

Justine Musk posted on Twitter in support of her child on Monday.

“‘I had a weird childhood,’ my 18 year old said to me. ‘I can’t believe I’m as normal-seeming as I am.’ I said, ‘I’m very proud of you,’ she wrote.

She added that her daughter then said, “I’m proud of myself!”
