How did the situation in Yemen get so bad?

The Yemen war, which started in 2015, continues even after 7 years have passed, once the United Nations called it a humanitarian disaster, and the situation is getting worse.

The Houthis generally come from the Zaydi sect of Shia Muslims and are believed to have Iranian backing.

When the Arab world was facing revolutions called- Arab spring Houthis captured the capital Sanaa after ousting President Mansour Hadi. Ali Abdullah Saleh was in power in February 2012.

In March 2015, Saudi Arabia launched an attack named Operation Decisive Storm on Yemen to remove the hold of Ansarullah (also known as the Houthi) from Yemen and bring its puppet government to power in Yemen. When Saudi Arabia started these attacks, it was being said that Saudi Arabia would occupy Yemen within a week. But the truth is that even after 7 years, this struggle continues. And not only has Saudi Arabia not succeeded in its mission, but Ansarullah’s popularity has also increased locally. and this movement has gained some advantage on battel field also and continuously attacking Saudi Arabia’s strategic position such as oil establishment deep in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Arabian coalition has received military and intelligence aid from the US, Britain, and France. However, the US halted arms sales to Saudi Arabia following a growing humanitarian crisis and continued criticism. However, intelligence assistance from America to Saudi Arabia is still going on.

Data from international organizations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) highlight the dire situation in Yemen.

According to these figures, at least 377,000 people have died in the Saudi Arabian attacks by the end of 2021. So far more than ten thousand children have been killed or injured in this war that has been going on for the last seven years. (Let us tell you that at the beginning of the Yemen war, the United Nations gave the final figure of 10,000 children’s deaths since then these figures have not been updated for almost four years.) Due to this aggression, more than 4 million people so far have been displaced.

At the same time, 1.74 crore people out of 3 crore people of the country need help to fill their stomachs. It is estimated that by the end of this year this count will increase to 1.9 crores.

5 million people of Yemen are standing on the verge of starvation, while about 50 thousand people are already facing starvation-like conditions.

Doctors Without Borders reported that a Saudi Arabian-led coalition airstrike has destroyed more than 500 hospitals and medical faculties and more than 1500 schools have been destroyed as well as many sports centers have also been targeted.

Yemen War and the situation in Saudi Arabia

It has been thought that Saudi Arabia was strong at the beginning of the war, it had strong support in the form of a coalition with the help of US and Western countries, but with the passage of time, Saudi Arabia’s allies began to leave it one by one. Priorities for UAE -Saudi Arabia’s biggest ally in the Yemen war have changed after they normalized ties with Israel. Now the UAE is pushing hard to replace Saudi Arabia in the Middle East. Due to this, there has been a rift between the two countries.

America, which has been continuously supporting Saudi Arabia, has banned the sale of arms after the new administration came. Human rights groups and many countries continue to condemn Saudi Arabia for its ongoing human rights violations. And are pressuring that this war should be ended as soon as possible.

Saudi Arabia has also suffered huge losses at the economic level. This country has suffered a persistent budget deficit since the start of the war. Inflation is increasing at the national level, and discontent is increasing at the national level.

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince bin Salman has tried to quell discontent by launching a number of populist schemes at the national level. They allowed the opening of cinemas and nightclubs in Islamic religious countries, women are allowed to drive. Saudi Arabia tried to attract foreign investment by starting the Neom project.

But the truth is that Saudi Arabia is badly trapped in the Yemen war. Some sources say that Saudi Arabia is in talks with Iran to get out of this swamp. However, what will the outcome of this conversation, or when this biggest human tragedy in human history will end, only time will tell.
